The Optometrists and Dispensing Optician Registration Board of Nigeria says over 60 million Nigerians are at risk of glaucoma disease in the country.
The Registrar of the Board, Dr. Obbina Awiaka made this known at a media briefing to commemorate this year’s Glaucoma week in Abuja.
According to Dr Awiaka, ‘’the World Glaucoma Week is a global initiative of the World Glaucoma Association to raise awareness about the eye disease.
These include a series of engagements with patients worldwide, eye-care providers, health professionals, and the general public to contribute to sight preservation.”
The Registrar said every black man is at the risk of glaucoma, and advised that the only way to tackle the disease was early detection through screening.
Dr. Awiaka described Glaucoma as the second leading cause of blindness Worldwide after cataracts.
