Dr. Obinna Edwin Awiaka

Registrar/CEO, Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN).

Dr. Obinna Edwin Awiaka assumed the role of Registrar/CEO of the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN) in 2023, becoming the youngest Registrar in the agency’s history. With over two decades of experience in Optometry and healthcare, he brings a wealth of expertise to his leadership of ODORBN.

Dr. Awiaka obtained his Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from the University of Benin in 1999. He further enhanced his qualifications with an MBA from Lagos Business School’s Owner/Manager Programme in 2019 and is currently a Senior Resident in the Nigerian Post Graduate College of Optometrists. In recognition of his contributions to the field, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by Prowess University, Delaware, USA.

His commitment to continuous learning is evident in his numerous certifications and fellowships, including being a Fellow of the Nigerian Optometric Association and the Institute of Arts Management and Professional Studies.

Before joining ODORBN, Dr. Awiaka founded and led Eyemasters Eye Clinic Ltd, a globally recognized and award-winning Optometric practice. His career has been marked by significant contributions to the field of optometry in Nigeria, including serving as the youngest President of the Nigerian Optometric Association and representing the association at international conferences.

Dr. Awiaka’s expertise extends beyond clinical practice. He is a certified Life Coach, known as the “Dream Coach,” and has worked with numerous corporations and healthcare organizations, providing insights on brand building and healthcare innovation. His commitment to social responsibility is demonstrated through his long-standing volunteer work as Clinical Director for Special Olympics Nigeria and the establishment of the I See Foundation, which has provided eye care to thousands of vulnerable individuals.

As Registrar/CEO of ODORBN, Dr. Awiaka is dedicated to setting and maintaining global standards for the practice of Optometry and Dispensing Opticianry in Nigeria. His focus is on ensuring patients receive exceptional eye care services delivered by ethical and highly skilled professionals who consistently uphold the highest standards.

Dr. Awiaka is a prolific author, speaker, and innovator in the field of eye care. He initiated the first international optical exhibition in West Africa, the I See Expo, and is the publisher of Eyecare magazine. His contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including induction into the Kwame Nkrumah Grow Africa Hall of Fame in 2023.

Through his leadership at ODORBN, Dr. Awiaka aims to prioritize the health and well-being of patients by ensuring access to safe, effective, and efficient eye care services delivered by extensively trained professionals across Nigeria.
